Cockatiel birds in New Zealand require careful planning when the bird is being sourced internationally. As a breeder, I always tell prospective owners that choosing a healthy, properly prepared bird matters more than selecting the most unusual color. Before a cockatiel leaves my care, I want to see consistent eating, normal activity, good feather condition, and confidence with routine handling.

New Zealand has strict biosecurity controls for animals entering the country, so an international purchase should never be arranged on the assumption that ordinary pet-travel rules apply. The permitted species, origin requirements, veterinary documentation, quarantine arrangements, and import conditions should be confirmed before making a purchase or booking transportation.

At home, preparation is just as important. Have the cage assembled before arrival, with secure perches, clean water, food the bird already recognizes, and a quiet area where it can rest. I have seen nervous youngsters settle considerably faster when their first few days are predictable rather than filled with handling and unfamiliar foods.

Before completing a purchase, ask about the bird’s age, weaning status, current diet, socialization, health records, and proposed transport method. A responsible breeder should be comfortable answering those questions clearly.
